Kanha National Park
Kanha National Park is home to more than 22 species of central Indian mammals including the Bengal tiger. It has more than two hundred and fifty species of birds, numerous reptiles and insects including butterflies.
Declared as tiger reserve it receives additional funding from Project tiger program for tiger conservation in India. The park is limited to 1945 sq.km of forest with 945 being the core sanctum sanctorum.
Most successful conservation effort has been saving the Hard Ground Barasingha or Swamp Deer (Cervus Duavcelli Branderi) which is the only sub species of Swamp deer existing here on Earth. Hence Kanha is the finest and well managed tiger reserve in India. The tiger is the keystone species here while major mammals like Leopard, Sloth bear, Gaur, Sambar deer, Langurs and ubiquitous spotted deer or chital are found in the park. The park is an ideal birding destination in India for forest birds.
Kanha is easily accessible from Jabalpur in MP, Raipur in Chhattisgarh and Nagpur in Maharastra. Jabalpur is the nearest railhead and airport. Bandhavgarh tiger reserve is six to seven hours drive from Kanha
The park re-opens from 1st October and closes on June 31st. Summers are hot while winters can be menacingly cold at peak.
