Darjeeling

Situated in West Bengal this little high altitude hill station is better known for its tea gardens than scenic beauty and trekking grounds. Darjeeling district offers the best views of Khangchendonzga and the Himalayan range from Tiger Hill at 2590 m.

Darjeeling is a cultural assemblage of Bengali, Tibetan. Sikkimese, Lepchas, Bhutias   and Gorkhas from Nepal.   There are many places of tourist interest and trekking in the hills. Combining you holiday retreat with trekking from here to Sikkim will greatly enhance your experience. A trip to tea plantations is also advised.

A visit to Buddhist monasteries – Gompas & Pagodas opens the door to understanding Buddhists religion and cultural practices of the community. The prestigious Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Zoological Park are worth a visit, both are in the same complex and offer interesting insight into Himalayan fauna and flora and mountaineering in the ranges.

Apart from trekking in the hills white water rafting in Rangeet and Teesta rivers are a way to experience rafting in the rapids.

Reaching there: The small toy train which ferries tourists from New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri) to Darjeeling Township, after negotiating the famous Batasia Loop. It is one of key attraction of Darjeeling and is a World Heritage Site.

Nearest airport in 90 kilometers away at Bagdogra. Darjeeling is reachable from Calcutta by road transport as well.
